After You’ve cleared UPSC, You’ll head to Mussoorie, to the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. This is where the real work begins. LBSNAA transforms successful candidates into officers ready to serve the nation.

In this article, you’ll learn about the training phases, how long they last, what you’ll earn during training, and what daily life looks like at the Academy.

IAS Training Duration in LBSNAA (2025-2026)

LBSNAA is located in Happy Valley, Mussoorie, in the state of Uttarakhand. Every year, around 180 IAS officers are selected across India. 

Once you join, your training lasts about two years in total. But this isn’t two years sitting in a classroom. You’ll spend time on campus learning the theory, then you’ll go to your state cadre for field work. 

After that, you’ll return to the Academy to complete your training. The structure makes sure you learn, practice, and reflect before taking charge as an independent officer.

Phases of IAS Training at LBSNAA

Your training journey has four clear stages. Each one prepares you for a different part of your career.

• First comes the Foundation Course. This is for all three All India Services together, you’ll meet IPS and IFS officers here. It builds a common base for everyone.
• Next is the IAS Professional Course – Phase I. This is where you study subjects like law, economics, and public administration. You also go on the famous Bharat Darshan tour.
• Then you move to District Training. You leave the Academy and work in your allotted state for one full year and there you’ll handle real administrative work under senior officers.
• Finally, you return for IAS Professional Course – Phase II. Here you share what you learned in the field. You also go on a foreign study tour and earn a master’s degree.

This training prepares you for the actual work of an IAS Officer. Your job will include making policies, running district offices, managing public money, and taking care of citizen welfare at different government levels.

IAS Professional Course – Phase I (Induction Training)

Phase I runs for about 22 weeks. The goal is to prepare you for your first ten years in service. This phase has three main parts: classroom learning, field exposure, and cultural activities.

1. Academic Module

The academic module lasts around 12 weeks. You’ll attend over 400 hours of classes during this time. The subjects you study include Law, Economics and Indian Economy, Political Concepts, Public Administration, and Management.

Classes run from 9:30 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. Your teachers are retired officers, university professors, and experts in their fields. 

Instead of dry lectures, you’ll study real cases. You’ll discuss problems in groups, this makes the learning practical and useful.

2. Bharat Darshan (Winter Study Tour)

After months in the classroom, you get to see India up close. Bharat Darshan is a study tour that lasts 6 to 7 weeks. You’ll travel nearly 20,000 kilometers across the country. 

During this tour, you’re attached to different organizations. You spend time with the Armed Forces to see how they work in border areas. You visit NGOs working in villages. You go to private companies to learn how they operate. 

The tour is tiring because you’re constantly moving, but it opens your eyes to how different parts of India function. You see problems you’ll need to solve as an officer.

3. Cultural & Inter-Service Exposure

LBSNAA also focuses on building connections. Zonal Days let trainees from different regions share their culture through food, dance, and music. The Sangam Programme brings IAS, IPS, and IFS trainees together for joint activities.

You learn that as an officer, you won’t work alone. You’ll need to coordinate with police, forest officers, and others to get things done.

District Training of IAS Officers

After Phase I, you leave Mussoorie for a full year. This is called District Training, and it lasts 52 to 53 weeks. You’re posted to your state cadre, and this training follows the Sandwich Pattern because it sits between your two Academy phases. 

You work as an Executive Magistrate and Block Development Officer and you handle land revenue work, implement schemes like MGNREGA, and might even monitor elections. 

A senior officer guides you, but you make real decisions. This year teaches you what the classroom cannot. You learn how the government actually works on the ground.

IAS Professional Course – Phase II

After your year in the field, you return to LBSNAA in May or June. Phase II lasts six weeks. This time, you’re not here to learn new theories. You’re here to talk about what happened during your district posting.

Officers share their field stories, and everyone learns from each other. You also prepare for your next role as a Sub-Divisional Officer. Before you leave, you go on a Foreign Study Tour to see how other countries handle governance. 

And when you complete Phase II, you receive an MA in Public Management degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Your training is officially complete.

Mid-Career Training Programme (MCTP) at LBSNAA

Your connection with LBSNAA doesn’t end after two years. The Academy calls you back at different stages of your career for more training. This is called the Mid-Career Training Programme.

• Phase III happens when you’ve completed 7 to 9 years of service. The focus is on making you better at implementation.
• Phase IV comes at 15 to 16 years. Here you learn about policy making and strategic planning.
• Phase V is for senior officers with 26 to 28 years of experience. This prepares you for national and global leadership roles.

There’s also a Common MCTP at the 20-year mark. This one focuses on working with other departments and states to solve bigger problems together.

IAS Training Salary & Stipend At LBSNAA

During your training, you receive a monthly stipend. You’re paid at Pay Level 10 according to the 7th Central Pay Commission, and your gross stipend is ₹56,100 per month, but you don’t get the full amount. 

The Academy deducts money for your hostel room, mess food, and other facilities. After all deductions, your take-home pay is between ₹35,000 and ₹40,000 each month.

Daily Life Of An IAS Officer Trainee At LBSNAA

Life at the Academy follows a strict routine. Your day starts at 6:00 in the morning. You either do physical training or go horse riding at the Polo Ground. Academic sessions begin at 9:30 AM and continue until 4:00 PM. 

After classes, you have time for sports or study and you live in hostels named after rivers like the Ganga and the Kaveri. The Academy maintains strict discipline.

You follow a dress code, learn protocol and proper conduct, but within this structure, you form friendships that last your entire career. 

The cold Mussoorie winters, the shared struggles, and the late-night conversations create memories you’ll carry forever.
